The Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) is a welfare scheme introduced by Govt. of India under Ministry of Health and Family welfare initially in Delhi on 1st July 1954. Over time, it has grown all over the country both in coverage and scope. Currently, CGHS provides healthcare facilities to over 30 lakh beneficiaries in 66 different cities to the Four Pillars of India's democratic setup, i.e. The Legislature, The Executive, The Judiciary and the Press. The model of healthcare delivery is unique due to large number of beneficiaries covered and open-ended approach in providing healthcare. The beneficiaries can avail healthcare services in different systems of medicine such as Allopathy, Homoeopathy, Ayurveda, Unani, Yoga, and Siddha. Functioning of CGHS is within the ambit of the rules and regulation laid down from time to time by the Directorate of CGHS, under Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.
